"The Most Amazing Rainbowfish"

I received my breeders from Gary Lange in April of 2020 as eggs. I didn't know much about this fish at the time, but was fortunate enough to receive this incredible species. Since then, Gary has proclaimed this fish as "The Most Amazing Rainbowfish". So far, I'd have to agree. This fish has amazed me with it's displays every morning. The males will show different colors when displaying to males versus when they display to females. A fascinatingly beautiful species of rainbow that looks great at any time of the day.

Melanotaenia sp. Kali Tawa

According to Gary Lange:

According to Gary Lange: "Amazing backstory! Plane ride from Sorong to the city of Kaimana. Then a long ride in a 16 foot wooden boat on a very bumpy sea to Lengguru. I’m not the type to worry about a life vest but each of us had ours on plus a spare close by. When the waves are so big that you fear being bounced out of the boat you may have gone too far! But we made it. After meeting with the chief to get permission to collect we waited most of the day until the only vehicle in town, a huge dump truck came back to take us fishing. After almost an hour ride on a gravel road we got to the magical Tawa. It was a fairly shallow and clear water stream. Three species of Melanotaenia were recorded here by us but this was the most special one of all!"

According to Johannes Graf:

"No doubt the highlight of the 2019 Papua trip was the discovery of this species. This is really something you don´t find every day. Thanks are due to Christophe Mailliet who gave me the hint to this new species. This rainbowfish stays small and shows a unique combination of colours: the dorsal part and the upper part of the side are metallic blue, the lower part of the side and the fins are white! This combination is topped by a flash red tail fin. The dorsal fin is white-blue. Dominant males show a red nape. The best: most of the colour is showed all day, not only when mating! I am very much looking forward to the DNA results."
